DEGREE AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
In order to practice, a veterinarian must obtain the following:
-A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M. or V.M.D.) degree from a four-year program at an accredited school.
-A passing grade on the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam (an eight-hour national board exam), after which a state license is granted.
-A passing grade on any additional testing required by the state (some states test on laws and regulations; others test clinical competency).
Most states insure that veterinarians keep current with advances in their field by imposing continuing education requirements.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Prerequisites for admission to a veterinary medicine program vary. Some programs require an undergraduate degree; others require a certain number of undergraduate credit hours. Some requirements that all programs have in common are:
-Science courses, such as chemistry, physics, biology and biochemistry
-Math courses, such as pre-calculus or calculus, statistics, algebra and trigonometry.
-Submission of test scores
